Character NAME: Rita Mordio
Canon & MEDIUM: Tales of Vesperia [game]
Canon PULL-POINT: End of Act 2, after the Enduring Shrine of Zaude; I'm intending to match Yuri's canon point.
Character AGE: 14
Character ABILITIES: Rita is a mage in a JRPG, to severely oversimplify. She has a limited capacity for melee combat using scarves and whips, which can be enhanced with special abilities called artes. Rita's forte, however, is magic artes, better known to the rest of the world as spells. The elements themselves are her canvas, and she abuses them on a regular basis.
A full list of Rita's artes can be found here; she should have access to all her melee artes, all her novice, intermediate, and advanced spell artes, her mystic arte Ancient Catastrophe, and she'll be able to work out her altered artes (and maybe Indignation) while she's in Exsilium.
Character HISTORY: (The Tales wiki has a decent amount of information on Rita and ToV's plot.)
Rita's role in Tales of Vesperia isthe DPS to give Yuri a little insight into how Terca Lumireis' resident magitech, blastia, work. She's an imperial researcher at the labs in Aspio, and highly-ranked there. Her official reason for having left in early canon is to clear her name, as Yuri believes her to be the prime suspect in the theft of the core to an aque blastia in the capital city's lower quarter. During their adventures, though, things get substantially more complicated; between the Blood Alliance (whose guildmaster turns out to have the aque blastia core, freeing Rita of guilt), Phaeroh, Estellise, the Hunting Blades, Alexei, the Adephagos... there are a lot of major wrenches in Rita's plan to return to Aspio and her research.
Among the largest of these, however, is her gradual discovery that blastia and their use to convert aer into mana for strike and magic artes is dangerous to the world. It starts as a few small clues, then is changed by a few big reveals into a major issue that needs serious addressing, especially when Estelle turns out to be a natural poison to the world due to how her body naturally converts aer. This discovery goes on to involve lots and lots of research for Rita before she hits on the (frankly crazy) idea to convert the souls of the natural protectors of the balance, the Entelexeia, into spirits that humans can draw on to convert aer without the nasty side effects of blastia. While it's a long process and taxes Estelle heavily, eventually she manages it, and her crazy plan culminates in the development of a weapon that sacrifices every blastia on Terca Lumireis to destroy a great calamity, the Adephagos. In short, Rita elevates herself from "blastia researcher" to "world savior", and considers it all for the advancement of magical research.
Character PERSONALITY: Rita is a little bit of an odd duck in canon. She starts out as an isolated, horribly snarky teen that seems to want nothing more than to get her job done so she can go back to her hut and ignore the world. She's been burned by people before, too; she states on at least one occasion that she prefers the company of the blastia she researches, as "blastia will never betray me". It takes a long time for Yuri, Estelle, and the others to get close enough to her for her to really let them in; it takes basically the entirety of Act 1 before Rita (accidentally) calls Estelle by her nickname. She also has a bad habit of being a little bit of a troll, especially to Karol. When she can't really express herself aloud, she tends to resort to violence, again mostly with Karol.
As time passes, Rita starts to mellow a little bit and her true feelings come to the front a little more often. Though she'll never admit it out loud (and especially not to Yuri), she doesn't want to go home. Nobody and nothing is waiting for her, and once she's gotten close to the party, it would kill her to be alone again. Her tendencies have made her a little unstable; she's a horrible tsundere once she's had some time to open up, and she's also a little bit crazy in her interactions, bordering on mild sociopathy. Her personal motto seems to be "shoot first, ask questions after shooting some more"; in almost any cutscene where a given NPC is resisting, her contribution is to call up a few fireballs as an open threat.
Once she's really started to bond with someone, Rita is an invaluable ally - she will happily follow you to the ends of the earth, and put herself in harm's way to make sure you'll be okay. She may deny it later, but in the heat of the moment, it's all she's concerned with. Over the course of the game, Estelle moves from a curiosity, to a friend, to a worrisome situation that Rita wants to solve before it kills the girl, and possibly into something more serious between the two of them down the line. Her relationship with Yuri changes over the course of the game too; she initially resents him for suspecting her of stealing the lower quarter's aque blastia core, but once that's recovered and Yuri doesn't blame her for it any longer, he starts to worry about her, and she begins to return that in kind, starting to honestly worry about him when he goes off on his usual suicide missions and dangerous tangents, and being horrified on his behalf when she starts to realize some of the things he's done to keep them all safe and to protect the Empire (and by extension, Flynn).
With more normal folk, Rita is a little bit snarky, but she isn't above calm, reasonable conversation. That said, though, she's also dangerously quick to anger, and isn't afraid to show it. Approach with caution. She'll also immediately perk up at mention of magical inconsistencies or danger to civilians. On a quest, Rita is all business, and focused on getting everything done without any problems. And if problems come up... well, when all you have is a fist, everything starts to look like a face. And by "fist", I of course mean "fireballs everywhere".
» EXSILIUM INFORMATION
Chosen WEAPON: Rita is bringing one of her mid-to-late-game weapons, a scarf called Psychedelica that gives her access to her mystic arte while she masters the skill that governs it. Rita can channel mana into this and any of her other primary weapons to stretch them out and make them actually hurt when she hits you... but she is a mage, so it won't hurt much. She also uses her main weapon as a magic focus. More than likely, its sentience will give Rita extra power (with magic) or reach (in melee) in a pinch.
Character INVENTORY: Rita's off-hand weapon is a large tome called Xaosologos (in Japanese, it's the freaking Necronomicon) that lets her overcharge some of her spells and converts some of her physical durability (read: her max HP) into additional magical capacity (max MP). The former she doesn't use much; the latter means she can be a mobile maiden of death even more readily. She's also got some of the party share of gels for recovery, some life bottles and other assorted curatives she probably won't need in Exsilium, a fair share of the party's gald, and a number of assorted spell research notes. In addition, she's carrying another tome on the secret location of the Temple of Water in her world (sub-weapon Hydronomos) that helps her get stronger a little faster.

First PERSON: [video]
[It's been a peaceful morning... well, as peaceful as things get around here. But suddenly, the stillness is shattered by an explosion. Several minutes later, there's a new video post; Rita is a bit singed but has a contemplating look on her face.]
Okay, that didn't work as well as I thought. Did I shape the mana wrong, or...? No, no, I'm overthinking it. But... hmm. Hey, does anyone else want to volunteer to help me work out this spell? I have most of the theory down, but I need to actually get this working before I need it next; I have no desire to blow myself up on a mission.
[She sighs deeply.]
I wouldn't even ask normally, but... in a place like this, I can't just keep going by myself, right? Not when there's so much on the line.
Third PERSON: Okay, Rita, don't panic. You're in some other world, probably alone, and you're here to save the fabric of space-time.
...Yeah, right, like I could not panic in that situation. Rita sighed as she walked down the street, face set in a scowl, paging through the information on her... what'd they call it? A tablet? Anyway, there was a lot to dig through, and subsequently a lot to think about. She knew, on some level, that there was no way out of this. But at the same time, she was also uncomfortably aware that this was huge. Saving Terca Lumireis was one thing; saving all worlds everywhere? That was asking a little much, and she knew it. She was one girl. What could she do?
But the more she thought about it... she was more than just one girl. There were a number of people in this place, and they all worked together on these missions through time. With other people, maybe she could find someone else like Yuri... someone else she could trust. And from there, she could keep going. Keep working toward growing into someone strong, that could get things done. Together with others, maybe she could save the world. Maybe she was worth something after all, even with everything that had happened.
Slowly, she raised a hand to her bodhi blastia around her neck, with a heavy sigh, realizing she'd come to a stop while she pondered this. There was no way to go but forward now. If she wanted to go home and see the others again, her only option was to fight for her future. And she would go home. There was no question about that. So she shook herself and started walking again. She had a lot to do... and not a lot of time. Every second here was borrowed, and there was no guarantee United Earth wouldn't be coming to collect at any moment. Without thinking about it, Rita's pace quickened, one hand twitching toward the scarf hanging from her belt, and her mind whirling between the briefing she'd just left, and the magic that was now her only saving grace.

Tales of Vesperia got a PS3 release in Japan aside from its X360 release; I have neither a CFW-capable PS3 nor a copy of the PS3 game, so I don't know what's in it aside from whatever I can read online, so more than likely I won't be doing anything that requires significant knowledge of the PS3 game (meaning no mention of the PS3-only party members or the new dungeons), except maybe the occasional information from skits that I can catch up on.
